Don Giovanni

Also called Nostitz Theatre or Tyl Theatre. One of the most beautiful historic theatre buildings in Europe built by the Count Nostitz Rieneck in 1783. One of the Estates Theatre’s many claims to glory is its strong link with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who conducted the world premiere of his opera Don Giovanni here in October 1787. It is the only theatre left standing where Mozart performed. Currently Estates Theatre is one of the stages of the Prague National Theatre.

This production is conceived as a replica of the legendary staging by the National Theatre Opera from 1969, which was the work of set designer Josef Svoboda and stage director Václav Kašlík. With this project we wish to enrich our repertoire for a long time to come with a production that is timeless in its gesture, corresponding to the genius loci of the Estates Theatre. At the same time we understand it as a tribute to and conscious declaration of allegiance to the legacy of these extraordinary artists in the field of Czech opera production. The conception of this staging also allows us to renew the tradition of inviting extraordinary guests for gala performances of the opera.
